Overview
Koper – Izola – Piran – Portorož – Koper
Istria is the largest peninsula in the Adriatic Sea. Three countries share this peninsula - Croatia, Italy and often overlooked, Slovenia. This region is a natural reserve with fertile soil and has an abundant natural and historical heritage. Koper, your city of arrival, is the historical core and represents the most picturesque parts of the north Istria. The waterfront is perfect for the many regattas that take place in the Bay of Koper. The historic area of old Koper is small but charming.
Your tour will leave Koper and move along the coastline to Izola. This coastal town has a rich fishing tradition. Most of the tourism is concentrated on the eastern side, at the bay Simonov zaliv, where there is a seaside resort with swimming facilities, hotels and restaurants. On the western edge of the town is the marina of Izola. During your drive, you will make a photo stop at a scenic spot to take in the views.
Your ride continues through the beautiful Strunjan Valley to the next point of the peninsula, Piran, which is also referred to as a Museum Town. This old seaport reflects the Venetian architecture which carries over from its proximity to Italy. The entire town is protected as a cultural and historical monument and its preserved medieval layout with narrow streets and compact houses, will be enjoyed as you explore on a short walking tour. You can easily see how the town rises from the water level to take on the look of a typical Mediterranean village. Now it is also an important cog in tourism as it has become populated with beautiful resorts, restaurants, and holiday houses. It also has the Sergej Mašera Maritime Museum and an aquarium to view during the freetime allotted while you are here.
And finally, moving around the end of the peninsula, you will reach the beautiful resort town of Portorož, a tourist town which boasts the longest tourist tradition in Slovenia and offers comfortable hotels and modern swimming pools, restaurants and events. Portorož has a casino, a sport airport and marina and it has been discovered as tourists from all over Europe and other countries as well vacation here. It is an internationally known holiday centre and climatic health seaside resort.
This tour will be eye-opening as the area was most likely one where you had no preconceived ideas. From now on, you will feel a tie to Istria having been there and been touched by its beauty.
As you return towards Koper, you will see the impressive salt flats that bring both economic and health benefits to locals.
