"Had half a dozen trips set up through Piper before COVID hit. She has been a champ with cruises cancelling, flights changing, cancelled plans, rescheduling, etc. Have rebooked several for next year and she is always happy to help and very detail oriented. It is especially helpful to have someone you know will be "on the other end of the line" when travel plans change, flight connections are missed or changed. Overview
Around Mundial Hotel
FIGUEIRA SQUARE The Figueira square is located next to Martim Moniz square. In the 15th century a big hospital was built on this square (Hospital de Todos os Santos), but it was totally destroyed after the 1755 earthquake. The square was all rebuilt after this big earthquake, during the government of Marquês de Pombal, minister of the Kingdom of D. José I, who was responsible for all the planning, reconstruction and restoration works in this area, which was much damaged, and that is why this part of Lisbon is called "Baixa Pombalina". In 1885, a covered market was built here (it was demolished in 1950), and Figueira square became the biggest market of Lisbon. Figueira square maintains the original 4 floor buildings that house shops, restaurants and the most pleasant "esplanadas", where you can have a cup of traditional coffee "bica". In the center of this square, there is a bronze statue of King João I, a work of Leopoldo de Almeida.
SANTA JUSTA ELEVATOR Adress: Rua de Santa Justa, Lisbon The Santa Justa Elevator was built in 1902 by Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard, and is one the the most interesting monuments in dowtown area. In Gothic Revival Romatic style, it is also know by Carmo Elevator, since it serves as link between Rua do Ouro and Rua do Carmo. It started to work by steam, and in 1907 started to work by electric energy, being the only vertical lift in Lisbon. On the top of the Elevator there is a cafeteria where you have a wonderful panoramic view over the city center and the river Tagus.
RUA AUGUSTA Adress: Rua Augusta, Lisbon Rua Augusta is the main street of Baixa Pombalina, linking Terreiro do Paço and Rossio square. It is a long pedestrian street, with many different shops, restaurants and also street artists and sellers. Here you can find everything, not forgetting the traditional flower sellers and hot chestnut sellers. The street is filled with street cafés with most pleasant esplanades and is one good example of the pombaline architecture, since its buildings are well preserved.
GLORIA ELEVATOR Adress: Calçada da Glória, Lisbon The Gloria elevator links the Restauradores square to the typical Bairro Alto (the stop is next to the wonderful Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara where you can have a wonderful view over the city). It was inaugurated in 1825, and conceived by the Portuguese engineer Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard, it started to work by steam and only in 1914 with electric energy. Two elevators work simultaneously, one ascending and one descending the hill.
SAINT GEORGES CASTLE Adress: Rua de Santa Cruz do Castelo, 1100 129 Lisboa http://egeac.pt The St. George's castle is located in one of the highest hills of Lisbon, and the first construction dates back to the 2nd century B.C. Researches concluded that since the 6th century B.C., many different civilizations settled here, from the Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans and Moors. It was conquered from the Moors by the 1st Portuguese King, D. Afonso Henriques in 1147. The castle received important conservation and improvement works from 1940 until 1990, and is today considered one of the most emblematic monuments in Lisbon. It offers his visitants beautiful gardens and from its viewpoints you can see almost every part of the city. There you can see a multimedia show (Olsipónia), a dark camera (Ulisses Tower – a 360º journey over Lisbon), an exhibition area, a restaurant "Casa do Leão" and thematic shops.
