Accessible only by boat, Jumby Bay Island, originally called Long Island, took its name from the Antiguan word "Jumbie" meaning playful spirit. It is an ancient coral reef, a rocky outpost, situated a few miles off the North East coast of Antigua, and became part of Christopher Columbus' discovery of the America's in 1493. It was Columbus who named Antigua, from an icon, "Santa Maria de la Antigua", found in the Cathedral in Seville where Columbus is laid to rest. Long before Columbus, a people called Amerindians, or "Arawaks", reached Antigua around 3000, BC.
In more modern times, the island was held by the British Crown during several periods, but eventually ended up in private hands.
