Creating a luxury hotel retreat in Franz Josef on New Zealand's South island was an opportunity for the Scenic Hotel Group to do something truly unique. We named this very special luxury hotel of ours, the Te Waonui Forest Retreat, and invite you to share a unique eco-retreat experience in the heart of the rainforest.

Te Waonui Forest Retreat is at the cutting edge of sustainable, luxury hotel accommodation. Great care has been taken to not only respect and preserve the environment around the property, but to celebrate and embrace the rainforest within the hotel design.

Every aspect of this luxury hotel has been crafted to an impeccable standard. Comfort is a top priority, with luxuriously appointed rooms featuring soft woollen underlays and plush down and wool duvets. The energy efficient rooms in the hotel feature double-glazing and deluxe soundproofing technology. In the appropriately named Canopy Restaurant guests can enjoy sumptuous meals with the freshest West Coast and South Island produce presented in a five-course degustation menu.

Our commitment to service includes attentive front office staff, valet parking, 24-hour reception and more.

Google Reviews

About Google Reviews: recently Google has converted their review system to require reviewers to have a proper, identifiable Google+ profile. This is a good thing, as it tends to cut down on bad reviews, both from people unwilling to stand behind their comments and fake positive reviews from the businesses themselves. Old, pre-Google+ reviews are still in the system, and will appear below as written by "A Google User". More info from Google is here.

Review:   This is a stunning property to stay at. This is a very high quality hotel, with high quality service. You will not be disappointed staying here, pure class all the way. The food is fantastic, as is the service. You will be papered all the way from check in to check out.

Review:   We recently stayed at Te Waonui retreat and would highly recommend to anyone. The staff made us feel like VIPs from the moment we arrived. We were greeted by Bruno who took care of our car, luggage and anything else we needed. He was always available to help. I would also like to mention Joanne who advised us on local sights and Richard who made us feel very special. The rooms are so comfortable and surrounded by serene forest views. Just delightful!!

Review:   My family and I had a fantastic time here. The service and hospitality shown by all the staff members from the moment you walk in is exemplary. The Maori cultural show held at 5:30pm everyday in the bar/bistro area is a wonderful display of New Zealand's roots. Special mentions to Richard (General Manager) who made the experience much more satisfying by doing his best to ensure that we were looked after. The rooms are quite spacious, clean and comfortable. I will definitely be coming back here again and would highly recommend it to anyone else.

Review:   This lodge is not at all to the level of other lodges in the country. Breakfast and dinner are included in the price but beware, if you stay here more than one night, the dinner menu is the same fixed price night after night. They struggle with addressing food allergies. Even refused to have me talk to the chef. Rooms are small and dark. The bar closes early. Another establishment nearby has a lively and noisy late night crowd.
