Rum In St. Kitts - Taste The HistoryExplore > Saint Kitts and Nevis > Saint Kitts > Rum In St. Kitts - Taste The HistoryOverviewTaste the drink of the islands! The Wingfield Estate is a great photo opportunity. It combines historical landmarks with the inherent beauty of St. Kitts. Make sure you bring your camera! Taste the history on this picturesque and flavorful tour of the island's once prestigious and profitable sugar cane industry. This opportunity only found in the Caribbean allows you to enjoy a selection of St. Kitts rums and explore Wingfield Estate with its 17th Century rum distillery. Your tour begins with the historic Basseterre City so have your cameras at the ready to take pictures of monumental landmarks such as the Berkeley Memorial, Independence Square (once was a slave market) and the Catholic Cathedral which showcases the proud heritage and culture of the Kittitian people today. A visit to the beautifully manicured grounds of Palm Courts Garden will be a delightful stroll through exotic plants and majestic palms. Your scenic journey into the past takes you to Wingfield Estate where ongoing restoration of its ruins, aqueduct, machinery, tall chimney, boiling pots and rum distillery of bygone times brings to life the fascinating history of the complex and highlights how rum was once made. This historic setting provides the perfect backdrop for your own rum tasting. You'll receive 4 samples of this fabled Caribbean spirit, each with its own distinctive and unique characteristics. Your next stop is the historic Romney Manor, where you'll be greeted with a refreshing planters rum punch. Romney Manor was originally the great house for a plantation that was once owned by the great-great-great-grandfather of Thomas Jefferson. Today the grounds have been transformed into lush, tranquil gardens. Also located here is Caribelle Batik, which is both a shop and a part of St. Kitts culture. Batik is created using an ancient Indonesian technique that uses wax to resist dye on parts of the fabric and then designs are applied using a canting tool or stamp. Caribelle Batik is famous for its unique designs that combine flourishing strokes and elements of nature. There will be artisans demonstrating the technique and creating products onsite while explaining the process. This is a must-see shopping stop and whatever you buy here will likely be the best and most unique of any souvenir you see on your vacation. Departing Romney Manor, you'll pass remnants of the St. Kitts Sugar Factory and the rum bottling and blending plant at Bird Rock where excellent rums such as C.S.R., Brinley’s and Belmont Estate are produced, before returning to the cruise ship pier. - Entry fees for Palms Court Gardens, Romney Manor and Caribelle Batik are included in the cost of the tour. - We recommend that you wear comfortable walking shoes and breathable clothing, and bring sunscreen. - The order of this tour is subject to change. - You must be 18 years or older to participate in this tour. - This tour requires a minimum of 2 passengers. - This tour does not operate on Christmas Day. - Not suitable for those traveling with a wheelchair.
