North Holland Sightseeing And Windmill VillageExplore > Netherlands > Amsterdam > North Holland Sightseeing And Windmill VillageOverviewWindmills and clogs will make this the perfect day outside of Amsterdam! Most of the windmills in Zaan Schans are still operating today and serve as everything from saw mills to oil mills. As urban development spreads through North Holland the village of Zaan Schans is considered by many to be a windmill sanctuary. This tour tells you the story of Holland’s gorgeous windmills. World-famous for its innovative and extensive use of wind energy, Holland’s windmills are both romantic and highly practical. Windmills are the reason that much of Holland exists at all. Because much of the country sits below sea level, wind energy powered the effort to pump the water off of Holland’s land base. Your tour begins with a drive through the North Holland countryside. On your way, you’ll stop at a cheese farm to taste a few varieties of gouda, Holland’s specialty cheese. When you reach the Windmill Village of the Zaanse Schans, you’ll have a chance to enter an operating windmill and see how it works. From there, you’ll visit a wooden shoe maker and then travel on to the Enclosure Dike, where you’ll drive on a road surrounded by seas on both sides. You’ll have an opportunity to stop in the middle of the Dike to visit its monument and appreciate this wonder of engineering. Continuing on, you’ll meander on a scenic road through the countryside to Volendam. This charming fishing village is your chance to eat some wonderful fresh fish, a Dutch pancake, or simply appreciate its beautiful seaside houses. Time permitting, you’ll visit the beautiful city of Edam on your return drive. - Admission to a spice windmill is included in the price of the tour. If you would like to enter an additional windmill admissions range from 2 to 4 Euros. - Food and beverages are not included in the price of the tour. Days offered: 7 days a week Departures:
