Overview
Walk and drive this fascinating medieval city with your own personal guide.
This city has a fascinating history. First occupied by the Danes, Tallinn is sold to the Teutonic Knights. Two hundred years later it is occupied by the Swedes. Russia conquers the city about 80 years later and that rule is maintained until the Bolsheviks seize Tallinn from the Germans who loose it once more to the Soviets. The year following, the Germans again take it and one year later, the Soviets are back. It was only in 1994 that the last of the Russian troops left Tallinn - and this extremely complicated history is behind all the doors of this medieval town. Luckily your guide will sort this all out for you.
What can you expect to see when touring the wonderful town of Tallinn? It has been preserved so well that, at first, you might feel as if you were in a museum or perhaps a movie set. Once you begin your dialogue with your guide, however, you'll understand the complexities that made Tallinn such a value to so many countries.
First you will circle around the Old Town so you can see the magnificent views of the medieval city walls. The best perspective will be found in Upper Town at the top of Toompea Hill, where you are afforded a panoramic view of the city. Your walking will begin here as you see the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, and you will visit the Dome Church and the Russian Orthodox Church. You will find yourself in the heart of Town Hall Square.
As you move into Lower Town, you'll recall the maze of streets you saw from above. Your guide has volumes of stories and history that turn each corner as you do. It is difficult to discern between buildings in the Lower Town. You could never imagine the part each might have played in the past. The Pharmacy, a highlight, opened 70 years before Columbus discovered America. You'll also see the Gothic Town Hall and the Great Guild House from the exterior.
The colorful market will be a perfect place to purchase some handmade souvenirs before you return to the ship. If you prefer to stay in Old Town, your guide will tell you how you can either walk or take a taxi back to your ship.
