Overview
Delve into 18th century life and enjoy the peaceful countryside.
Many of the cities in Eastern Europe have developed their own open air museums to educate younger generations, as well as visitors to their country. This lovely park's name translates to "Rock by the Sea" in Italian and, when you visit, you'll understand how it got its name.
Just a short pleasant drive from the Old City, you'll be introduced to Estonia's past. The Estonian Open Air Museum allows you to travel back in time to the rural Estonia of old. A life-sized reconstruction of an 18th century rural/fishing village, this amazing 200-acre site comes complete with a church, inn, schoolhouse, several mills, a fire station, 12 farmyards, and net sheds by the sea.
In addition to the 72 buildings on the property, furnishings and household items that you would expect to find during these times have been preserved here. This is a great way to get an overview of 150 years of rural life.
Your guide will narrate as you visit some of these buildings, all surrounded by beautiful forests and the waterfront. By way of comparison, the dozen farmyards offer insight in to the varying incomes and occupations of the different households.
This is a perfect half-day tour that will complement your time in Tallinn. It is, by our estimation, the best of the open air museums you will find in Eastern Europe.
- Entrances fees to the museum are not included. The cost is €6 per person.
- We can pre-arrange a horse and buggy if someone in your party has difficulty walking. There is an extra cost for this, but it is perfect for families with young children and seniors, and it will allow you to enjoy the park to its fullest. Contact ShoreTrips to reserve this service.
