Overview

A three-hour walk with a culinary expert to explore markets in Shanghai and enjoy a traditional meal

The combination of cuisines from nearby regions have manifested in Shanghai to provide one of the best culinary experiences in all of China. Joining a local chef or food writer you will make your way to the Zhenning Lu market to focus on the tradition and history of typical Chinese culinary practices. As you soak in the sights, smells and sounds of everyday life at a Shanghai market you will learn about the area cuisine's relationship with heritage, geography, politics and community. As a center of trade, commerce and migration Shanghai provides the perfect looking glass into this unique microcosm of Chinese culture.

Following an hour at the market you will head over to a Shanghainese restaurant located in a colonial era villa which has remained standing through the area's turbulent past. This perfect environment will set the ambience for your meal prepared by one of the most interesting chefs in Shanghai. With your guide describing every dish as it comes out you will learn about your chefs impact on the local cuisine as well as your meal's relevance within the current food trends of China.
