Overview
Journey through the unknown side Palermo to see some of the most unusual monuments in the world.
This full-day tour will take you to visit some of the most unusual monuments in the world.
Begin at the Piazza Pretoria, with its beautiful Renaissance fountain that was originally built for a villa near Florence: a piece of 16th century Tuscany in the center of an Arab-Norman city. Nearby, visit the Church of La Martorana, where 12th century severe Norman architecture clashes with the frivolities of the Baroque style.
Your next stop are the Capuchin Catacombs, where you will view mummified corpses in varying degrees of preservation. Prepare to be shocked by a macabre sight: 8,000 mummified bodies dressed in their best Sunday clothes and propped up against the walls!
Now continue on to the Zisa Castle, commissioned by the Norman King William I but built by his Muslim architects, with all their Middle-Eastern influence, and is clearly inspired by Egyptian and North Africa architecture. Construction began in the 12th century, when the building was conceived as summer residence for the Norman kings.
In the afternoon, your guide will drive you to Bagheria, a neighbouring town of approximately 40,000. Once a fashionable resort town, Bagheria is known for its Baroque villas. Visit the most unusual one, built by the Prince of Palagonia, renowned for its complex external staircase, curved facades, and marbled interiors.
This is a full day with a great driver and licensed guide.
