Get familiarized with the second biggest Crimean city that started welcoming guests shortly after the Soviet Union break up. See modern life of ex-Soviet naval city which is now naval base for Russian and Ukrainian fleets. Visit Panorama - a historical museum, which was opened in 1905 on the 50-th anniversary of the defense of Sevastopol during Crimean War.
The museum hides a magnificent (115 meters long, 14 meters high) canvas by the famous Russian battle artist F.Roubaud, and is the best example of the national art of panoramic painting. The picture depicts the first main assault of Sevastopol on the 18th of June 1855. The circular canvas merges into the 900 sq. m. relief model. Spectators, rise on the observation platform in the middle of the hall, as if finding themselves on top Malakhov Hill during one of the fiercest and decisive battles of the war.
Proceed your tour by an hour drive to Bakhchisaray - once the capital of
the mighty Crimean Khanate. Bakhchisaray, translated as “The Palace of
Gardens”, lies on the bank of the river Churuk Sou and is the vivid
example of the Middle Ages of Tartar culture. In the outskirts of
Bakchisarai tombs from the 8th c BC were found, belonging to the
Scythians, Taurs and Alans who lived here. In 15th,16th centuries
Bakhchisaray became the center and the capital of the Crimean Khanate.
Khan’s palace was built here in 1532-51, by slaves and craftsmen from
Iran and Turkey. Now it houses the local History & Archeology Museum.

Next sight to visit is Saint Clement monastery. It supposed to be built at the end of the VIII - beginning of the IX centuries and consider as one of the oldest in Crimea. It's foundation connected with appearance of icon-admirers - monks and seculars, who escaped the Byzantine icon fighters' prosecutions after the ecclesiastical Council in 754 A.D.
After the peninsula seizure by the Golden Horde inhabitants, most of the monasteries stopped their existence. Uspensky monastery was preserved, and since the XV century it had become the Crimean center of the Orthodox. It had been existing till 1778. During the Crimean war the hospital was settled in it and till now graves of the Sevastopol defense participants lying at the ancient monastery cemetery.
