Overview

Experience a high-speed ride onboard an airboat, and visit an old plantation home.

We loved this woman. She qualifies as a true entrepreneur. She arrived in the states at the age of 21 and could not speak English. Her first job was teaching French at Colby College in Maine, where the students, in return, taught her English. She went back home, but returned and settled in New Orleans, married, and started a family. Of the many jobs she enjoyed over the years, her time with a large tour operator, in particular, felt "right" to her. Taking all she learned, she created her own excursions and she delivers them in a "small" way, that is, groups no larger than 14. We give her an A+.

As we exit the bustling city and drive along the coastline of Lake Ponchartrain, you'll get a flavor for what it's really like for most of the residents of this city, those who work and play outside the French Quarter. The legacy of New Orleans runs further than the hysteria on Bourbon Street and continues to where old plantations remain, reminiscent of the days of Gone With the Wind. Also famous for its deep south swamp life, this tour combines both parts rolled into one as you get a personal look at the history behind this famous area.

We'll begin by venturing into the past with a tour of Destrehan Plantation, the oldest documented plantation home in the lower Mississippi River Valley. It was built in 1787 and remains a fine example of classic Southern elegance. Here, you'll be able to interpret the lives and lifestyles of the plantation's former residents (both free and enslaved), and see demonstrations of period crafts such as dying with indigo, candle making, and open-hearth cooking. Your tour will be guided, but you'll have some free time to roam on your own.

Next, we'll drive to a remote swamp for a thrilling high-speed ride onboard a small airboat, comfortably gliding over marshes deep into secluded bayous for approximately 2 hours. Your Cajun guide will explain all about alligator hunting and life on the bayou. Visions of swamp life, and probably some campy swamp movies, will undoubtedly rise to the forefront of your imagination.

At the conclusion of this fascinating tour, you'll be returned to your starting point, where you can search for a taste of alligator, if it suits you!
