Your full day of touring the South begins at the Three Cities, once home to the Maltese nobility, as well as to the Knights of Malta. Here, you'll visit the Inquisitor's Palace, built in 1574 and used by the inquisitors as their residence, court, and prison. You'll then proceed to the Maritime Museum, located at the old British Naval Heaquarters at Fort St. Angelo. This historical visit will showcase a variety of authentic artifacts relating to Malta's intense military history.
We'll also visit the ornate Church of St. Lawrence, erected in the 16th century. Partially rebuilt as a result of damage inflicted during World War II, it houses a large altarpiece by Mattia Preti depicting "The Martyrdom of St. Lawrence."
Next, our journey takes us deeper south to the fishing village of Marsaxlokk. Here, low lying buildings and traditional fishing boats called "luzzu" line the waterfront. Take some time to wander at your leisure through the local marketplace where you can buy local souveniers or sample some thyme honey or carob syrup, which is made from the fruits of the carob tree and purported to have various medicinal properties.
