Overview
After this tour, Malta will no longer be a mystery, but rather a country full of history and charm.
Who would have guessed that the small country of Malta, which is 9 x 17 miles, is the location of some of the oldest megalithic temples in the world, dating back to 3600 BC?
Due to its size, you can enjoy a half-day tour that will give you a real taste of the country and still have time to get to the water's edge and bask in the glory of the Mediterranean Sea.
This tour highlights the two capitals of the country of Malta. Valletta is the current governmental head of the country. It is primarily Basque in design, though you'll see evidence of Mannerism and Neoclassicism, with hints of modern architecture in selected areas. In 1980, Valletta was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
It is a lovely city and comparable to Cadiz and Venice. The Barraka Gardens, one of our stops, offers stunning views of the Grand Harbour.
We'll lead you on a walk down Triq Republikka and your guide will point out numerous historical buildings, including the auberges, the Grand Masters Palace, and St. John's Co-Cathedral, where Caravaggios' masterpiece "The Beheading of St. John" sits among other treasures.
The second stop is the city of Mdina, which was the original capital of Malta. The contrast is immediately apparent as this medieval city, built in the 9th century, is built on a plateau in the centre of the island. You'll be amazed at the views of the entire island as seen from the high bastion walls. Here, we'll immerse ourselves in the city by strolling through the maze of narrow alleys that separate one magnificent structure from another.
