Finnish Art And Architecture In HelsinkiExplore > Finland > Helsinki > Finnish Art And Architecture In HelsinkiOverviewHidden among the old treasures in Helsinki are modern artistic masterpieces. Eliel Saarinen, Armas Lindgren, Herman Gesellius, and Akseli Gallen-Kallela are three architects and an artist from this area who have been inspirational in the field of design. This tour offers a chance to see and hear about the famous men who influenced the 19th and 20th centuries worldwide. We begin with some of the graceful buildings in Helsinki that were designed by Finnish architects. The city itself has an open and spacious feel and is easy to understand. Departing from the harbor, we'll pass the Uspenski Orthodox Cathedral and the colorful Open Market. We'll join the coastal road at this point and head into the countryside. The backdrop of wooded forests, majestic rocks, and clear running water served as inspiration for many. Upon arrival in Hvittrask, we'll visit the historic village that was home to the famous architects who built it--Herman Gesellius, Armas Lindgren, and Eliel Saarinen. The main building, designed in National Romantic style and built of logs and natural stone, was both a common studio and a home for Armas Lindgren and Eliel Saarinen. Herman Gesellius lived in the courtyard building. The Saarinen home is a museum today, and the courtyard building has a restaurant and a café. We'll take you on a tour of Saarinen's magnificent home, where we'll see a permanent exhibition of Finnish art and handicrafts. It's easy to see the attraction of this area to architects as you relax in the peace and tranquililty while wandering the grounds. Your last stop is Tarvaspaa, the former home and studio of the famous Finnish national painter, Akseli Gallen-Kallela. Now located inside a lovely park at the edge of the sea, this home was built around 1912 and designed by the artist himself. Inside the home you can learn about Akseli's life and work through storyboards. Other exhibits by several local artists also tell of the lifestyle in the villages during this time period. We'll provide complimentary refreshments before your return to Helsinki, where the tour ends with a panoramic ride around the city. - Wear comfortable clothing and flat shoes.
