Constanta Sites And Romanian CultureExplore > Romania > Constanta > Constanta Sites And Romanian CultureOverviewThis tour is all about local culture. We will pick you up at the pier or your hotel and drive through the old city part of Constanta, at the Ovid Square, named so after the famous Roman poet, Ovid, exiled here by the Roman Emperor in 8 A.D. His statue, built 1888 by the famous sculptor, Ettore Ferrari, faces the Sea. Right behind the statue, there lies the Archeological Museum which welcomes you for interior visit. This museum is one of the richest in the country, with collections of prehistorical, Greek, Roman, Bizantine, Medieval archaeology. Among the statues exhibited here, the most famous are that of Fortuna Goddess and Pontos God (protectors of the town) and of the Glycon snake, the protector of the house and family. After visit of the museum you will see one of the largest known mosaics in Europe. Nearly 2,000 years old, the mosaic was once an immense decorative pavement used by the Romans. Today, a substantial portion remains of the thousands of multi-hued tiles that comprise this beautiful and extraordinary piece of history. Leaving Ovid Square, it’s another short drive to the Ethnographic Museum. After this we will visit a local restaurant for a snack and wine tasting. Please note: The order of sights visited may vary to avoid congestion; order of sights viewed en-route from the comfort of a vehicle is subject to normal (regular) traffic condition and may vary due to different timings (order of sights visited) used to avoid congestion.
