Market Tour, Cooking Class & Four Course LunchExplore > France > Nice > Market Tour, Cooking Class & Four Course LunchOverview"Learn more about a culture through its food than through its museums." A wise woman once said, "You can learn more about a culture through its food than through its museums." We couldn't agree more! On this tour you will: - Visit market - Help design 4 course meal - Learn how to prepare typical foods - Learn about culture and history - Lunch We'll start out this fun day by visiting the Cours Saleya market, while there is still a fresh morning breeze. Stroll down the narrow maze of old streets known as "Vieux Nice" with your guide. Imagine bars, cafés and fish restaurants on either side and market stalls down the center. Taste famous Niçois street food like "la socca" (a chickpea-flour pancake), among others. Walk through the market and admire the vivid displays of flowers, candied fruit and seasonal produce. The smells are simply wonderful. Though the main aisle is the most colorful, the coolest thing is the extensive collection of small producers' stalls. Every ingredient we'll find here is firmly rooted in the region and much of it is organic. Depending on the season you might see untreated oranges, including bitter oranges for jam, wild asparagus, Mara des Bois strawberries, tomatoes ripened on the vine, figs bursting with juice and of course the mix of salad leaves known as mesclun (no Niçois meal would be complete without it!). Depending on your menu choice, your guide will select the the best meat and fish for you. Some possibilities could be lamb from the nearby Alpes de Haute-Provence or Mediterranean sea bass. Because traditional Niçois cooking relies more on vegetables than meat or fish, we can also plan an entirely vegetarian menu. No matter what the main ingredient of our meal, we will not forget the wine! We will make our way past the fresh pasta shop to your guide's demo kitchen in rue du Jésus, where if pissaladière is on the menu we can get started on the yeast dough. A couple of hours later we will sit down to an authentic Niçois meal and toast our efforts with a glass of rosé (or red/white wine). If you are arriving to Nice via cruise ship, you will be able to walk to the meeting place. Full instructions will appear on your voucher. The meeting place for all tours (hotel guests and cruise ship passengers) is La Civette du Cours. We will provide you with directions. Please let your guide know if you have any dietary restrictions or food allergies before beginning the tour. We will take up to six people for a class, so if there are fewer than six we may combine you with other reservations (though it always depends on demand for a particular day). Days offered: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday Departures:
