Overview
Visit the tomb of the Lord of Sipán and view the fineries that were found there.
Journey away from the port, on your way to view the royal Tomb of the Lord of Sipan and the collection of finery (now housed in a museum) that was found there.
Depart from the port of Paita and drive about 3 hours into the northern part of Peru, to the Lambayeque Valley. Here, you will visit the ruins of Sipan, a Moche archaeological site that is famous for the tomb of the Lord of Sipán. The Lord of Sipan was a warrior priest (a Moche descendant) who died around 250 AD at about age 40.
Located 33 km to the east of the town of Chiclayo, this tomb is considered to be one of the most important archaeological discoveries in the past 30 years, due to the fact that the main tomb was found intact and undisturbed by thieves. The complex has three adobe pyramids and was used as a religious center. The ritual objects and jewelry found there included 1,200 pieces of gold and precious stones, ceremonial goblets, bracelets, necklaces, earrings, wrist plates, ceremonial knives (all jewel-encrusted), and more.
Next, it's on to the Royal Tombs of Sipán Museum, which exhibits the most important archaeological remains of the Mochica culture in an exceptional exhibition that combines scientific accuracy, security, and enjoyment to show the jewels, emblems, and ornaments found in the Lord of Sipán's tomb.
After your visit to the museum, drive to nearby Chiclayo for lunch in a typical area restaurant.
