The Artisans And Religion Of CatacaosExplore > Peru > Paita > The Artisans And Religion Of CatacaosOverviewVisit the artisan town of Catacaos and take a stroll down the famous Calle Comercio. The utilitarian and decorative pottery of Catacaos, home to some 250 artisans, is one of the finest in Peru, largely because of the fine tones achieved by potters in the use of the color and burnishing of their jars, as well as the sculpting of typical characters and animals that come to life in the hand-worked clay. Depart from the cruise ship pier and travel for a little over an hour to the artisan town of Catacaos. Upon arrival at the main square, you will visit the Church of San Juan Bautista. Built in 1547 and destroyed in 1912 by an earthquake, renovations began in 1915, but were seriously set back in 1983 by the strong rains of El NiƱo. Renovation began again in 1984, and was completed in 1995. The temple has been renamed as a replica of the Sixteenth Chapel, because of its painted walls and roofs made by local artists. Continue on to the Calle Comercio, or Trade Street, a beautiful historic street that is two centuries old. Calle Comercio has received thousands of traders over the years who have come offering their reef and junco products. Here you will find marvelous objects of silver and gold, as well as delicate wool weavings handmade by local artisans. A stroll along this street will treat you to all of the exquisite crafts of Piura, and the artisans themselves are usually eager to explain how they created these fine pieces. - The price of this tour includes all transportation and a great English-speaking guide. - The drive from the cruise ship port to Catacaos will take a little over an hour.
