Overview
Explore the city of Piura, home to the naval hero Miguel Grau.
The city of Piura is located in the Chira river valley at the far north end of the Sechura desert, the largest desert in Peru. The region was originally ruled by two great cultures known for their skill in metalworking and ceramics: The Vicus and the Mochicas.
Welcome to Piura, the birthplace of Admiral Miguel Grau, Peru's most important naval hero in the War of the Pacific. It is a vigorous city that blends the traditional and modern with very good results. The city dates back to 1532 when Spanish Conqueror Francisco Pizarro founded the first Spanish city in South America, San Miguel de Piura. In 1588, it was moved to the city's present site.
When you arrive, begin with a visit to the Museum of Vicus, home to an excellent collection of ancient ceramic pieces. And make sure not to miss the great display of gold artifacts! After the museum, continue to the downtown area, where you will see the Cathedral, built in 1588. Admire the altar piece of the Virgin of Fátima, in addition to the Sagrada Family and the Boy Jesus of the Prague.
Your next stop will be the Church of the Carmen, a museum of religious art that contains invaluable treasures such as the baroque altar from the Christ Crucificado, 18th century wood carvings, and a painting of San Agustin. You will also visit the Church San Francisco, the site of the proclamation of the independence of Piura in January of 1821.
Your final stop will be the Grau House Museum, the old home of Miguel Grau, director of Peru's Naval Academy. The first room contains photos and documents of the house, and the others are home to documents, letters, diplomas, photos, clothes, and furniture directly used by the Admiral.
