If you ask the locals of South Korea they won't hesitate in telling you that Seoul is on its way to passing Tokyo on an international scale. As a home to over a quarter of the countries' population it is no surprise that Seoul has turned into the breeding ground for some of the most interesting aspects of the area's culture. The mixture of Seoul's past and present provides an endless amount of intrigue and epitomizes Asia's historical timeline.
Following your pick up at the cruise ship pier in Incheon you will make your way into the depths of Seoul. At the Gyeongbok Palace you will immerse yourself in South Korea's governmental heart and its most famous destination. With the presidential palace and US Embassy in plain sight the importance of this area will resonate throughout your surroundings. Translated as the "Palace Greatly Blessed By Heaven" this landmark has unfortunately not lived up to its title. Between complete destruction in 1592,assasinations in 1895 and Japanese rule in the early 20th century, the Gyeongbok palace has become a symbol of reselience for the entire country.
In the Northeast of the Gyeongbokgung compound you will find the National Folk Museum which is seperated into three large sections. With over 40,000 pieces of Joseon Dynasty treasures, domestic replicas, film and photos this one of a kind museum will give you the perfect illustration of social life through the ages in South Korea. Make sure to look for the hints of Confucianism's impact on their culture!
During your stop in Insadong you will come across one of the greatest markets in the world. With many items that can only be purchased in Korea, Insadong Street represents the epicenter of authentic Korean clothing, crafts, teas, paintings, jewelry and pottery. With a festive atmosphere and endless alleys to explore, it is safe to say there is a little bit for everyone on this historic street.
You will remember Gwnanghwamun Plaza as one of the most welcoming places in the city and as a place you would frequent if you were living in Seoul year round. Referred to as the "heart of Seoul" and opened in 2009, this plaza stands as a reminder of the area's history and provides you with a beautiful panoramic view of Gwanghwamun,Gyeongbokgung, Mt. Bukak and Mt. Bukhan. With memorials to past war heroes and plaques demonstrating the native language of Koreans, you will leave this modern plaza with a better understanding of where Korea was in the past and where it is today.
