Lago Escondido With Bbq Lunch & Old PrisonExplore > Argentina > Ushuaia > Lago Escondido With Bbq Lunch & Old PrisonOverviewEnjoy all the best of Ushuaia in this wonderful tour! This excursion offers a great opportunity to travel inland and discover some of the rugged mountain region that surrounds Ushuaia. Departing from the pier, your tour begins with a drive through the eastern section of Ushuaia, offering a great overview of this active town located in the End of the World. Enjoy a panoramic view of Lago Escondido in the distance. We will make a stop at Paso Garibaldi to enjoy the views over Lago Escondido. A typical lamb barbecue, served with variety of salads, has been arranged for your lunch. Next we will visit the Old Prison Museum. The idea of colonizing with penitentiaries derived from the English and the French. The first prisoners, 25 men and 9 women, arrived in Ushuaia in 1898. In 1902 the building of the National Prison was created. The chosen location was just east of the small town of Ushuaia, which at that time consisted of about 40 houses. The construction of the prison (built by the first convicts) went on in 1920. Although it started as a "second offenders" prison, the most brutal criminals came here. Convicts that behaved well were awarded a job outside the prison as woodsmen or in the workshops. Stories about tortures and punishment are part of the legend of the place, but not a real practice, except in the case of some isolated periods. Since 1983 this institution preserves the documents about the history of the island and encourages research programs in hopes of better understand all aspects of the region, past and future. - Please dress in warm, layered clothing and comfortable shoes in order to fully enjoy and participate in this excursion. - BBQ lunch includes one bottled water and soft drink per person.
