Experience the best--Bad Doberan, a ride on the Molli-Train, and Heiligendamm!
Our journey through the Mecklenburg countryside is a very popular excursion and simply the best way to gain insight into the history and development of Germand seaside resorts along the coast.
Start your tour with a lovely drive through the scenic countryside to the monastery town of Bad Doberan, located nine miles west of Rostock's city center. Surrounding the town are beautiful beech tree forests, close to the Baltic Sea. It was one of the earliest German settlements in Mecklenburg and today it is a popular bathing resort.
The first highlight is an incredible red brick cathedral, Doberaner Münster, which once belonged to a Cistercian monastery and is one of the most impressive examples of North German brick architecture.
Enjoy a visit inside these 700-year-old walls and stroll through the surrounding park. Learn about the lives of the monks who have prayed within these walls before embarking on a ride on one of Germany’s famous narrow gauge railways.
We’ll then take a ride on the “Molli-Train,” a historic 19th century steam engine that acts as a tourist attraction/shuttle for everyday use, in the town and to the nearby beach village. Enjoy your 25-minute scenic ride through the paths and lanes of Mecklenburg to the beautiful seaside resort of Heiligendamm. Nearly 200 years ago this enchanting place was built for the German Kaiser as a fashionable resort for European royalty. It was nicknamed “The White Town on the Sea” because of all of the white buildings.
Continue your journey to Kuhlungsborn, where you will be given some free time to shop before returning back to the ship.
