Overview
Uncover one of the most thrilling stories of Berlin’s past.
This tour will take you back in time to examine the fascinating details of the Berlin Wall, from its inception as a barbed wire fence, erected overnight, to its fate as a mined, multi-wall system, guarded by deadly sharpshooters. Accompanied by East Berlin historians, your day will be peppered with anecdotes about daily life in the socialist’s world, shocking espionage stories, and more.
You will be met by your driver who will take you through the countryside of Germany and bring you to Berlin, where you'll meet your personal guide. Your guide will be a real character of the city, someone who studied history or architecture, has years of experience in guiding, and is eager to show you his hometown in a vivid and in-depth conversation.
If there is something specific you would like to see or a part of history you are keen to learn more about, please let us know beforehand or tell your guide upon your arrival. Your guide will organize the lunch break according to your wishes, please let him know when you arrive.
Upon arrival in Berlin, your tour will begin at the impressive Ernst Thälmann Monument, a massive structure commemorating the leader of the German Communist party during the 1920s, who was tortured and murdered by the Nazis.
You will drive through the East of Berlin through Prenzlauer Berg, the “Montmartre of Berlin.” This old home for intellectuals and artists opposing the communist system is now the center of the city’s “hip” scene, as you will see as you travel through.
Then you’ll continue to the Berlin Wall Memorial to see the most important remaining parts of the Wall. The tower of the Great Wall Museum is the best place to survey the structure of the double wall system including the "death strip". You learn all about the breakneck escape attempts, of death jumps and escape tunnels. You will have a look at the Alexanderplatz and Berlin TV Tower, constructed by the East German government from 1965-1969.
Of course, you will discover Checkpoint Charlie, the central military checkpoint that connected the American sector with the Soviet empire and see the Palace of Tears.
You will drive along Karl-Marx-Allee, the must-see central boulevard erected in the unique Soviet “sugar bakery” style. The building of this site to communist grandeur sparked the people’s uprising on July 17th, 1953, a turbulent episode which was violently crushed by soviet tanks.
You will pass by the East Side Gallery, the longest remaining and painted section of the Berlin Wall. And for sure, you will take some pictures!
