The Imperial City And Terra Cotta WarriorsExplore > China > Xi'an > The Imperial City And Terra Cotta WarriorsOverviewYour time in China isn't complete without a visit to the Terra Cotta Warriors. I had heard about the Terra Cotta Warriors for years, but could never have imagined such a sight as this. The experience not only of visiting this "exhibit," but trying to visualize the creation of each figure was beyond me. And the city of Xi'an proved as interesting a visit as the warriors, one I will never forget! Considered to be one of the most remarkable destinations in China, the walled city of Xi'an will leave you amazed by its remarkable representation of an ancient Chinese civilization. As the capital for 13 dynasties and 73 emperors, Xi'an made a name for itself as a melting pot of culture and a trade hub for merchants from all portions of the Silk Road. Although its eventual decline restructured its importance within the country, Xi'an still remains an educational and cultural metropolis. Your tour will start with an exploration of the city wall, either by bike or electric cart. At 39 feet high and up to 46 feet wide, this complex represents one of the few complete city walls still standing today and is arguably one of the oldest military defense systems on the planet. A 4-5 hour walk would allow you to navigate its entire perimeter, but the preferred method of transportation is by bike. While pedaling up and down the wall, you will be able to gaze into the city below and get up close and personal to the four gates guarding the interior. It won't be hard to imagine how many believed these barricades were impenetrable. The walls truly have a life of their own! For as impressive as the wall is, the most remarkable attraction in Xi'an can be found outside of the city at the home of the Terra Cotta Warriors. Considered one of the most important archaeological excavations of all time, this historic display is one of the most breathtaking sites in all of China. Discovered by peasants digging a well in 1974, a stunning three pits were uncovered, housing over 7,000 life-sized clay soldiers, archers, and horses. Ordered for creation by tyrannical ruler Qin Shi Huangdi to guard him in the afterlife, this impressive collection will leave you in awe. The sheer size of the display, coupled with the intricate and unique design of each solider, has historians calling this the 8th Wonder of the World. Following your walk around the edges, your guide will take you to the exclusive lower viewing platform to put you at eye level with these extraordinary warriors. - Price includes admission to the Terra Cotta Warriors - Price includes bike rental on top of city wall.
