Overview
Visit the Apokoronas Villages, all different and with an individual charm.
According to one tradition, the name Aptera derives from Apteron, King of Crete, who is said to have lived in the time of Moses around 1800 BC. The legend of Apteron lends itself to the suggestion that the city was once a colonial settlement governed by the Dorian Apteros or Aptaros who took part in the occupation of Crete towards the end of the Minoan era.
Georgioupolis is a small village located by a very long sandy beach, now the site of many fine hotels. Although the village is now geared towards tourists, it remains quite attractive with its small fishing harbor, river, and large eucalyptus trees. While you are there, take some time to visit the olive factory.
Gavalohori, your next stop, was once a sizable town and at one time home to many kafeneons (cafes). Now there is only one – a place where traditionally men sat and drink raki or coffee and discussed the issues of the world.
Also visit Kokkino Horio, a traditional Cretan village and home to a factory of nature glass, as well Almyrida, a small fishing village east of the town of Chania. Picturesque villages, nice beaches, and a good climate make it a favorite summer holiday resort.
