Overview
Discover your spirit of adventure by climbing to the summit of Mt. Karfi!
Discover your spirit of adventure by climbing to the summit of mountain Karfi and exploring the birthplace of Zeus.
The ideal way to explore the heart of Crete is by walking on coastal paths, ascending the highest peaks and crossing spectacular gorges. Each season gives magnificent colors and interests, as your guide takes you off the beaten paths, into Crete's rich flora and fauna, and to mountainous villages to meet the "authentic" Cretans and their traditions.
Starting from Ambelos, home to the old windmills, you will hike to the summit of Mountain Karfi at the altitude of 1148m. You will be rewarded for your climb by the spectacular view at the top: the whole of Lassithi plateau, the largest plateau of Crete, and the north coast. Spend some time exploring the Minoan settlement located at the summit, and then descend to the small and beautiful Nissimos valley and the village of Tzermiado. Stop for a picnic lunch that your guide has packed.
At Lassithi plateau you will have the chance to experience a small journey through mythology by visiting the birthplace of Zeus, the cave of Dictaion Andro. On your way back to Heraklion, you will make a stop at the Homo Sapiens Museum, which invites you to make yourself familiar with human evolution dating all the way back to the Stone Age.
