Chania is the second largest city of Crete, and lies at the east end of the Gulf of Chania. It was originally the site of a Minoan settlement, and after the Minoan period it reermerged as an important city-state of Classical Greece

Chania is made made of two parts: the old town, and the the larger modern city. This tour will take you around the lovely old town, situated next to the old harbour. The old town was formerly surrounded by old venetian fortifications, built in 1538, but now only the eastern and western parts survive. The crumbling Venetian harbour is home to a 15th century lighthouse and the Mosque of the Janissaries, built 17th century.
Explore the Splantzia quarter behind the inner harbour, and the Venetian Arsenals. Visit the 1860 Greek Orthodox Cathedral ("Trimartyri"), as well as the 1879 Roman Catholic cathedral and Etz Hayyim Synagogue. The Archaeological Museum is home to findings from different parts of the county and from several historical and prehistorical periods.
