The Carrara Quarries And The Versilia CoastExplore > Italy > Florence > The Carrara Quarries And The Versilia CoastOverviewVisit the home of the famous Carrara marble, followed by a stop in the village of Pietrasanta. Your trip will begin at the cruise ship pier, where you will be met by your private, licensed driver/guide, who will accompany you during your adventure. This tour includes: • Round trip transportation from the cruise ship pier in an air-conditioned vehicle • English-speaking driver/guide Visit/see: • Carrara quarries • Colonnata • Pietrasanta • Forte dei Marmi It will take you an hour and a half to drive to the Carrara quarries, famous for the white or blue-gray marble that is found there. Visit the first quarries and learn more about the difficult work of the "cavaioli" and how they cut the marble. Many famous structures, such as the Pantheon, Trajan's Column in Rome, and the Duomo di Siena, are constructed of it, as well as many famous Renaissance sculptures, such as Michelangelo's David. Enjoy a great view of the coast from the hill before stopping in for a visit in Colonnata village, where you will get a chance to taste the local "lardo of Colonnata," so soft it will melt in your mouth. Next, you will drive down to Pietrasanta, a small medieval town with Roman origins that grew to importance during the 15th century, mainly due to its connection with marble. Michelangelo was the first sculptor to recognize the beauty of the local stone. Visit the village, where all of the most important contemporary marble workshops are located. On the way back, stop in Forte dei Marmi, the so called "Saint Tropez of Tuscany" because of its exclusive beach clubs. Lunch and any entrance fees are not included in the price of this tour. We have found that there may be a rare occurrence of a port change from Livorno to La Spezia. La Spezia is accessible to the same sightseeing as Livorno, but is a slightly longer ride. This port requires an increase in cost as the distance from these highlights is further. Your guide will be waiting for you as you disembark. You may have an adjustment to your tour itinerary depending on your exit time, but be assured that your knowledgeable driver/escort will direct you to a satisfying day. This change is an exception to our policy that ship changes will result in a refund. People have been too disappointed sitting on the ship after this itinerary change and we feel this is in the best interest of the traveler. The total additional cost is $215. We apologize for your difficult day, but promise that the sun will shine as soon as you meet your driver. Days offered: 7 days a week Departures:
