Overview
Private English-speaking driver and transportation for the day.
The drive from La Spezia will go by quickly as you drive through the beautiful Tuscany countryside - rolling hills covered with vineyards and silvery green olive groves - on your way to the medieval village of San Gimignano.
When you reach San Gimignano, you will find a small, walled medieval hill-top town, famous for its medieval architecture and especially its towers. In the Middle Ages, fortified walls and watchtowers were used to show power and prosperity. Of the town's original 76, now only 13 towers remain. Enjoy your time with a stroll along the narrow cobbled streets, taking San Gimignano's sights: Piazza della Cisterna, and the Collegiata in Piazza del Duomo,a Romanesque cathedral known for its fine frescoes.
Half an hour after you leave San Gimignano you will reach Siena, where you will find the walls and gates enclosing a city center that is composed of narrow, winding streets and old buildings and palaces. The center of the city is dominated by a large, shell-shaped square called the Piazza del Campo which is the focus of Siena's civic life and where the biannual "Palio delle Contrade," a dangerous horse race round the square, takes place. See Siena's great cathedral, San Domenico church, begun in the 12th century in the Romanesque style but transformed in the 13th century into one of the finest examples of Italian Gothic. The town also serves as a market for the surrounding agricultural area, which produces cattle, cereal grains, olives, and, above all, wines - its Chianti being perhaps the best known of all Italian wines.
Your English-speaking driver will not enter sites with you, but will give running commentaries of what you are seeing and make sure you have enough time to visit each site. You will be supplied with a map of Siena.
