- Incredible insight in to Michelangelo's life and works
A true master of the Renaissance, Michelangelo's amazing life and work will be the focus of this tour. On this walking tour of his native city, you will visit his home and the place where he is buried, as well as some of his amazing sculptures.
The Basilica di Santa Croce (Basilica of the Holy Cross), where Michelangelo is buried, is the principal Franciscan church of Florence. Although Michelangelo actually died in Rome, he was transported to Florence for his final rest.
Also visit the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, where the
Florentine Pietà is located. This sculpture, depicting three figures taking Jesus down from the cross, is unusual for a pietà, which usually depict Mary in mourning with the body of Christ on her lap.
Next, make your way to the Medici Chapels, where the four allegories of
Night and
Day, and
Evening and
Morning are located.
Finally, make your way to the Accademia to see the famous
David. The Gallery has housed the original David of Michelangelo since 1873, when the sculpture was moved from its previous outdoor location on Piazza della Signoria. Allegedly brought to the Accademia for reasons of conservation, there were other factors involved in the move.
