This cathedral, the third to be built in Florence, was the largest in Europe when it was completed, with room for 30,000 people. It is noted for its high, octagonal-ribbed dome that is Brunelleschi's most famous masterpiece.
You'll also visit the Strozzi Palace, begun by Benedetto de'Maiano for a rival of Medici. Today it is used for international expositions like an annual antiques show and Italian high fashion shows. Next, make your way to the Chapel Brancacci, located in the right-hand arm of the transpt in the church of Santa Maria del Carmine. It is well known for its frescos, which were begun in 1424 by Masaccio and Masolino, before Masaccio set off for Rome.
