Our tour begins at the Palazzo Medici, also called the Palazzo Medici-Riccardi, designed by Michelozzo di Bartolomeo for Cosimo de' Medici. Built between 1444 and 1460, the palace was well-known for its rusticated stone masonry and three stories that become more reserved in style as they reach upward. The Medicis lived in the palace until 1540, when it was bought by the Riccardi family. The Riccardi's made expansive renovations during the 17th century.
Next, we'll make our way to the Palazzo Strozzi, begun by Benedetto de'Maiano for a rival of Medici. It is a beautiful example of civil architecture, in many ways inspired by the Medici-Riccardi Palace. Today, it's used for international expositions like the annual Antique Show and the Italian High Fashion shows.
Finally, head to the huge Pitti Palace, a large, mainly Renaissance palace located on the south side of the Arno, a short distance from the Ponte Vecchio. It was originally home to Luca Pitti, a Florentine banker, and in 1549 was bought by the Medici family. Napoleon used it as a power base in the 19th century, and in the early 20th century it was given, with its all of its contents, to the Italian people, to serve as one of the largest art galleries in Florence. Today, it houses several major collections, in addition to those of the Medici family.
