This tour includes:• Palazzo Medici
• Basilica di San Lorenzo
• Medici Chapels
Our tour begins at the Palazzo Medici, also called the Palazzo Medici-Riccardi, designed by Michelozzo di Bartolomeo for Cosimo de' Medici. Built between 1444 and 1460, the palace was well-known for its rusticated stone masonry and three stories that become more reserved in style as they reach upward. The Medicis lived in the palace until 1540, when it was bought by the Riccardi family. The Riccardi's made expansive renovations during the 17th century.
The Basilica di San Lorenzo (Basilica of St. Lawrence) was the parish church of the Medici family. Located at the center of Florence's main market district, San Lorenzo was consecrated in 393 and is one of the many churches that claims to be the oldest in Florence. Brunelleschi was commissioned to design it and Michelangelo was commissioned to reconstruct the façade, but his patrons' money ran out before any real work was done. The huge Renaissance interior, which contains the tombs of several members of the Medici family, is the oldest area of the present church and was the only part completed during Brunelleschi's lifetime.
Of course, the grandest part of San Lorenzo is the Medici Chapels. The Medicis were still paying for it when the last member of the family died in 1743. Michelangelo's statues of
