Overview
Experience the beauty of the countryside surrounding Florence by bike.
You will be fitted with bikes and helmets, and provided with a water bottle for your trip.
You will begin biking at approximately 10:00 a.m. The first three miles are up-hill along characteristic small back roads with little or no traffic. Make several stops along the way for photographs and great views, and to talk about the olive oil production of the region.
Once you reach the top of the hill you will lock up the bikes to take a break, and take a short walking tour up to a panoramic vista point overlooking Florence. After this, it is back on the bikes and you will ride to lunch. The terrain is still slightly uphill at certain points, but the views of the surrounding countryside dotted with villas, vineyards and olive groves makes it easier. Lunch is at a small, family owned trattoria, and is a three course meal that includes several antipasti and two different types of pasta - wine from the vineyard you will be visiting is included with the meal.
After lunch it is back on the bikes and off to the vineyard. What you will find when you arrive is a small, non-commercial, local production family-owned and operated vineyard. They produce a local Chianti wine as well as white wines, dessert wines and an excellent quality olive oil. Tour the vineyard and see where they make the wine, where the wine is stored and aged and where the olive oil is stored as well. Then do a small wine and olive oil tasting where you will also have the opportunity to purchase any of the wine or olive oil. Purchases made can usually be carried back by the guide.
Your return trip is all downhill from this point on. Several stops are made along the way for re-grouping and photo opportunities as well.
- This is a moderately strenuous ride. Participants should be free from any ailments or conditions that may be aggravated by physical activity.
- This is an earthy tour. Please wear good shoes, as well as shorts and a windbreaker in the spring and fall.
