Overview
Explore the rich history and natural beauty that lies outside of Rome.
Beautiful gardens, splendid villas, unparalleled artistic and architectural grandeur - all of this lies just an hour and 15 minutes away from the port of Civitavecchia in the striking ancient city of Tivoli.
A private car will pick you up from the port of Civitavecchia and take you on the roughly 1 hour and 15 minute journey to the ancient city of Tivoli. At first an independent ally of Rome, in 338 BC the city was defeated and absorbed by the Romans.
Once in Tivoli you will visit the famous Villa D'Este, built in the 16th century for the Cardinal Ippolito D'Este (son of the famous Lucrezia Borgia), who had it built for himself when he became the governor of Tivoli. The beautiful building is world known for its astounding garden, decorated by hundreds of artistic water fountains.
After Villa D'Este you will re-descend the hill and visit the ruins of the famous residence of the Emperor Hadrian. This villa was the Emperor's "ideal city," a retreat from the chaos of Rome and the classical buildings in it.
Before returning to Civitavecchia, you will stop to look at the marble quarries at the foot of the hill.
- The admission fees of 8€ per person to Hadrian's Villa and 6.50€ per person to Villa D'Este are not included in the price of this tour.
- Please note that on the first Sunday of each month many tourist sites in Italy have free admission. This can often result in long lines. If you are staying at a hotel, it may be beneficial to avoid booking a tour involving inside visits to major attractions on these days. If you have questions, contact ShoreTrips.
