Overview
A full day of exploring Trabzon.
Come explore the city of Trabzon, a gateway for the merchants of the neighboring regions throughout history due to its strategic position on the Silk Road and shoreline of the Black Sea.
You will start discovering the city with the overwhelming scene of Sumela Monastery standing in great authority as if commanding to the valley from the steep cliff embracing it.
You will enjoy the gorgeous view of the surrounding misty forest and the winding streams below, which will make you realize not only the religious significance of the site but also its natural beauty.
After enjoying your lunch break at a local restaurant, you will continue with the country residence of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the great leader of the Turkish Nation during the World War I and the founder of Turkish Republic. The mansion maintains its original decor and truly reflects the atmosphere of how an early 20th century Turkish mansion would look.
Your next stop in Trabzon is St. Sophia Museum, a former church that is also a good example of late Byzantine architecture with its history dating back to the 13th century. The museum displays a combined taste of Byzantine and Ottoman art.
Before returning to your cruise ship, you will visit Ortahisar Buyuk Fatih Mosque, also known as The Golden Headed Mary Church, which was converted into a mosque by the Ottomans upon conquering the city in 1461.
At the end of your shore excursion, your guide will escort you back to your cruise ship.
