Overview
If you have been to Ephesus already, this is the trip for you!
Depart from the pier in Izmir for an hour and a half drive inland to the ancient city of Sardes.
We'll begin with a visit to Sardes and the ruins of the Temple of Artemis, the remains of the Byzantine Church, and the site of the ancient marketplace of Agora.
As you stroll along the kingsway, you'll see the remains of one of the oldest synagogues in Asia Minor and the wonderfully restored facade of the gymnasium, where both scholars and athletes were trained.
Enjoy your lunch at a local restaurant in Alasehir and sample one of the regional Turkish wines vinted in this part of Anatolia.
When you return to Izmir, you'll visit the Kemeralti Market area, where you'll see the Kizlaragasi Han (The Ottoman Inn), a fine example of 18th century architecture. Browse through the narrow streets and enjoy some shopping before returning to your cruise ship.
