Overview
A private tour to the most beautiful city in the Yucatan.
Once you enter Merida, you quickly realize that it is the cultural focal point for the entire peninsula. Actually, it was named the Cultural Capital of the Americas in 2000. It is one of the Yucatan's most hospitable and nostalgic cities. True enjoyment of this city calls for time. It's a busy cosmopolitan city, but its people thrive on its leisurely attitude. Leisurely lunches, Sunday strolls, time to watch courting couples on one of the many s-shaped park benches--it is a romantic city.
A 40-minute ride from Progreso will bring you to the heart of Mérida, Colonial Centro. Central to its existence are the old churches and the market place. You will be able to visit the San Ildefonso Catherdral, finished in 1598, the Government Palace, Montejo's House, and the Central Park. As you travel through the city, you will notice the wide avenues and large main square. The history behind the construction of this city is truly a lesson in recycling as the building began with the dissembling of the Maya pyramids that were found there.
Your bilingual guide is very experienced and knows the truths and tales of the area. He will be there as you travel to tell you all he knows.
You will have some time to browse through the handicrafts market. Your guide can provide assistance to you if you choose to purchase some of the famous crafts from the area. This area is known for its handwoven hammocks and copal or amber jewelry, as well as lots of folk art.
