PUNAKAIKI AND THE PANCAKE ROCKS

Photo #1 of 3
PUNAKAIKI AND THE PANCAKE ROCKS - Kea Heritage Tours.

The heaving swells of the Tasman Sea have carved the coastline of the West Coast for millions of years. Nowhere is the effect on the landscape more spectacular and profound than at Punakaiki. Experience the power of the sea as it surges into the sea caves and regularly blasts sea spray high out of the blowholes.

The famous 'Coast Road' to Punakaiki and the Paparoa National Park is one of the most beautiful in the country and follows part of the ancient Greenstone Trails, used by Maori for centuries in search of Pounamu (jade).

Ranked by Lonely Planet as 'one of the best scenic coastal journeys in the world'.

Overview

Kea Tours has a total commitment to life on the West Coast. Owners Matt and Linda Lysaght share a passionate enjoyment of the beauty of the region, its awesome landforms, its resilient yet relaxed lifestyle, and an appreciation of the character of the people that live here.

The West Coast is increasingly being recognized as the guardian of the country's natural heritage. It is a region of primitive towering rainforests, water-worn limestone landscapes, snow covered mountains and glaciers, rushing rivers, restless coasts, rare birds and plants. The diversity of the landscapes is more than matched by the variety of fauna and flora.
