Overview

Southern Ocean Lodge aims to provide an iconic accommodation experience on Kangaroo Island and is designed to be a sanctuary of comfort, style and personal intimacy, redefining the Australian standard.

Located at Hanson Bay on the Island's south west coast, the Lodge site adjoins both the Flinders Chase and Cape Bouguer / Kelly Hill National Parks. Set back from a cliff above the pounding surf the sensitive design showcases a full frontal panorama and is within easy reach of all of Kangaroo Island's major attractions. Modern luxury and design integrity meld with Kangaroo Island vernacular and an amazing coastal colour palette, creating a unique eco chic style.

Its location, stunning views, contemporary environmental design, locally sourced food and beverages, personalised interpretative activities and modern wellness spa ensures its status as a South Australian icon.

Twenty-one luxe suites commanding mesmerising views of the Southern Ocean cantilever along the coast, creating the ultimate fusion between a breathtaking wilderness setting and unbridled creature comforts.

Interiors feature lavish king beds, sunken lounge, dramatic glass walled bathroom featuring Southern Spa amenities and outdoor terrace with occasional seating and daybed. Other features include; walk-in robe, complimentary room bar, twice daily housekeeping, optional climate control, heated floors, internet, music system (with MP3 input), safe and telephone. Televisions are in selected suites only.

Signature design elements such as sandblasted limestone floors and recycled spotted gum feature walls, as well as contemporary bespoke furnishings and artworks commissioned from local Kangaroo Island artisans harness the natural theatre of this dramatic landscape and environs.

Dining at Southern Ocean Lodge is both a dynamic delight for the senses and a true gastronomic journey of Kangaroo Island; the 'produce to plate' approach is a real passion for Chef Tim Bourke and his team.
Celebrated as Australia's culinary capital, the rich soils and pure rains of South Australia inspire artisan growers to produce a bounty of premium, fresh and often organic food and wines.

The daily changing menu honours these fine local ingredients with a cuisine style at once sophisticated and simple to promote the intense purity of flavours and to create a very special dining experience, unique to the Island and to Southern Ocean Lodge.

An excellent range of diverse Kangaroo Island and South Australian wines and beers has been hand selected to comprise the beverage menu. Rates include all dining and all beverages (cellarmasters list additional).

The Southern Spa is a private oasis of calm, perched high on a cliff top and commanding dramatic views of the Southern Ocean stretching toward the Antarctic. A destination in its own right, the spa fuses the unique landscape and location of Southern Ocean Lodge with the acclaimed Australian-made Li'Tya range of spa products and professional staff.

A signature spa menu offers a selection of traditional and cutting edge treatments. A steam room and chill lounge complement an international spa design showcase.

Combined with the crisp Antarctic highly oxygenised air from the pounding surf, the Southern Spa invites guests to immerse in a pure, natural environment that is assured to rejuvenate and relax.

Southern Ocean Lodge offers guests a complete and personal Kangaroo Island experience. A signature itinerary of selected guided island excursions is designed daily and included in the tariff, allowing guests to encounter abundant wildlife in a 'zoo without fences' and discover the Island's unique natural attractions, often with exclusive access and always with a touch of luxe.

The Southern Ocean Lodge guide introduces sea lions at Seal Bay, guides an exploration of the vast wilderness of Flinders Chase National Park, and leads a journey through coastal flora along the limestone clifftops. A menu of Bespoke Experiences offers further exploration and excellent private charters are also available. Discover epicurean delights, visit local artists, or step off the beaten track to encounter wildlife in Australia's own Galapagos.

Google Reviews

About Google Reviews: recently Google has converted their review system to require reviewers to have a proper, identifiable Google+ profile. This is a good thing, as it tends to cut down on bad reviews, both from people unwilling to stand behind their comments and fake positive reviews from the businesses themselves. Old, pre-Google+ reviews are still in the system, and will appear below as written by "A Google User". More info from Google is here.

Review:   Spectacular view from any angle on the property. Definitely one of the most beautiful place I have ever been. The room is beautiful decorated and very generous in size. Totally green hotel with water coming from rain harvesting and solar panels providing electricity. Love all day free flow drinks. Can't get enough of different gorgeous walking routes around the lodge. Plenty of complimentary tours if you wish to venture outside. If you wish to do just one the light house was my favorite. Although if you love animals then go for the seal tour. For an off beaten track lodge such as this, it is vital that the restaurant offers good selection and tasty food. They definitely do not disappoint on this front either. We thoroughly enjoyed our food and drinks here enormously. The only point deduction is due to the fact that majority of the staffs at the hotel are interns. For a small and exclusive property such as this, it is not acceptable that the same staffs keep asking for your names at lunch and dinner. I personally also find it strangely unhygienic that all the staffs keep insisting on shaking our hands when we sit down for meals and about to break our breads. We also overheard a staff complaining about past guests to current guests. However, if you stare out to ocean all the problems in the world just disappeared!!

Review:   Fantastic views of the Ocean from every room. Wild and beautiful surroundings. The great room (with a warm fire and well-stocked bar) is just the place to spend a lazy day if the weather is not obliging.
