You will be met at the port by your guide who will then lead you to your air-conditioned transportation to begin the tour, and your drive to ancient Olympia. The ruins of ancient Olympia, dedicated to Zeus, the father of the Gods and located at the southwestern foot of Mount Kronios is a ‘must see’ destination when visiting the port of Katakolon. Since 1829 when a French team partially excavated the Temple of Zeus and from 1975 to the present day The German Archaeological Institute continue to excavate the site. Olympia was the most religious and athletic centers in Greece, and it is here that the Olympic Games were originally held – every four years –to honor Zeus. You will have the chance to admire the Gymnasium, the Palaistra, the temple of Zeus, the temple of Hera, Hera's altar and finally the ancient stadium of Olympia from the outside. The tour guide will give a detailed tour about the history and mythology of the ancient Olympic Games, and will also show you pictures of what all the monuments used to look like. Upon completion of this tour, you will have a much better understanding of this historical site. After this visit, we will move on to the town of Olympia for a short 50 minute stop, and chance for you to enjoy some refreshments, or a coffee at one of the many port side cafes. At the end of the tour, you can choose to be driven directly back to cruise port, or be dropped off in Katakolon to explore on your own, and find your own way back to ship. - Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. - Food, beverages, and gratuities are not included. - Entrance fees are included to Olympia site, but Museum tickets are not included and can be purchased locally for 6 €/person. - Restrooms are available at the entrance to Olympia, and there are steep steps to get into them. There is an additional charge for the restroom - approximately 50 cents. - We recommend that you bring sunscreen, hat, and bottled water as it gets extremely hot at times. - This tour involves approximately one mile of walking, and will involve some inclines, steps, uneven surfaces, and cobblestones. - This tour is not suitable for wheelchairs users since the sites do not have wheelchair access. - This tour requires a minimum of 4 participants for all cruise ships. There is a maximum of 24 participants per departure. - You are purchasing a shared tour and you will be expected to maintain the pace of the group. - If you use a walker, wheelchair, or scooter, or if you have mobility problems, we suggest that you purchase a private tour for your best enjoyment. Also, please note that if you have an infant, we would also suggest a private tour. - Please note this tour cannot wait for late arrivals past the scheduled departure time.
