OverviewEnjoy the best that Luxor has to offer in one day! There is nowhere else in the world where you can walk the streets of such an enormous and well-preserved ancient city. You will feel as though you have been transported into ancient Egypt as you walk amongst the larger than life monuments, tombs, and obelisks that were erected thousands of years ago by Egyptian Pharaohs. These sites are a must-see for those who will be in Safaga. Embark on this incredible journey into the past, through the Egyptian desert and into the temples that the Pharoahs once graced. Luxor has often been called the world’s greatest open-air museum, with one of the largest and most well-preserved collections of ancient monuments in the world. What is commonly referred to as Luxor consists of the city of Luxor, the town of Karnak and the city of Thebes. This is a region that is monumental in both scale and history. Upon disembarking your ship you will be greeted by an escort who will take you to meet your Egyptology guide. You will depart from Safaga, a small port city on the Red Sea, and encounter beautiful mountain and desert views on the 3.5-hour drive to Luxor. You will explore the Valley of the Kings, where magnificent tombs were carved into the desert rocks, richly decorated, and filled with treasures for the afterlife by generations of Pharaohs. Rising out of the desert plains in a series of terraces is the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, ancient Egypt’s only female Pharaoh. The temple emerges from the sheer limestone cliffs that surround it, as if the temple were born from the cliffsides. On the way back to the Nile river, the road passes by the famed Colossi of Memnon, once known for their mysterious haunting voices at dawn. After a delicious set-menu lunch, you will head to the Karnak Temple. Built over a period of two millennia by generations of Pharaohs, the 62 acre Temple of Karnak was dedicated to the God Amun. The scale of the 134 columns that comprise the Hypostyle Hall, all 10-12 meters tall, can only be described as awe-inspiring. Your final stop will be the Luxor Temple, which was once connected to Karnak via the Avenue of human-headed Sphinxes. One day, archaeologists hope to link the two cities together again. For now, you can view the existing rows of Sphinxes that lead to the temple and imagine walking along this avenue thousands of years ago as you are flanked by these mythical guardians. - Make sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring a light sweater for evening as the temperatures drop when the sun goes down. - Please be aware Luxor is a 3.5-hour drive from Safaga.
