Private: Bornholm Island Highlights- Half DayExplore > Denmark > Ronne > Private: Bornholm Island Highlights- Half DayOverviewExplore the island of Bornholm to experience small towns, castle ruins and gorgeous scenery. The northern part of the island of Bornholm consists of dramatic rock formations, very different from the rest of Denmark. We'll visit this part of the island to check out its interesting, unique, historic and beautiful sites. Your tour departs from the port of Rønne and heads towards the fishing village of Hasle, passing through a lovely wooded area which connects these two villages. From Hasle, you can see the coast of Sweden, a mere 20 miles away at its closest point. Approaching the northern tip of the island you'll arrive at the impressive ruins of the medieval fortress Hammershus, where your guide will relate its history. Today, Hammershus is the largest castle ruin in Northern Europe. Construction of the castle began in the early 1200s, to consolidate the power of the archbishop of Lund over the island. For the next 500 years, Hammershus was the seat of power for the island’s succession of rulers. In 1743, the king of Denmark finally abandoned Hammershus and the castle fell into ruin until 1822 when it was listed on the National Historic Register. After exploring Hammershus, your private tour continues along the north-east coast of Bornholm through rolling countryside and charming hamlets, arriving at the small fishing village of Gudhjem. Its location on a steep rocky outcrop is the only one of its kind on the island. You'll take a stroll through the village to view the restoration and preservation of its original environment. The climate – and especially Bornholm’s many hours of sunshine – provide good growing conditions for mulberry, walnut and fig trees. Bornholm has four round churches, the largest being the Round Church of Østerlars. The church's black roof provides a striking and beautiful contrast to its alabaster white exterior. Recently restored frescoes, including one depicting the birth of Christ, are visible on its center column. A stairway inside leads all the way to the top of the church, offering splendid views of vast areas of Bornholm. The final leg of your tour back to Rønne passes through the lovely wooded area of Almindingen Forest with rift valleys, small lakes, and captivating scenery. - The local currency is the Danish Kroner but most shops and restaurants accept Euros. - There is some walking on this tour.
