Our Favorite Lord Of The Rings Tour - Half Day

Photo #1 of 2

Overview

Experience the real Middle Earth & visit WETA Cave where creatures and special effects come to life.

Lord of the Rings fans will be thrilled to see some of the actual filming locations of these iconic films. At the Weta Workshop, learn how special effects, creatures, editing and more were seamlessly blended together to bring J. R. R. Tolkien's beloved stories of Hobbits, Wizards, Orcs, and more, to life.

With a Lord of the Rings specialist as your guide, you're in for a fun, informative and exciting day. We begin with a tour of some of Wellington's highlights and see the Embassy Cinema, site of the world premieres of The Return of the King (my personal favorite) and An Unexpected Journey.

A stop at the Mt. Victoria lookout provides a gorgeous overview of the city before we head down to a pine forest. Here we'll experience the actual locations for such memorable movie scenes as “Dunharrow Encampment,” “Shortcut to Mushrooms,” “Race to the Buckleberry Ferry,” and the iconic “Get off the Road” scene (where the Hobbits hid from the Black Riders). We suggest you watch the movies again before this tour to refresh your memory of these significant sequences.

Next we will visit an incredible place, the Weta Workshop. This is the real heart of not only the Lord of the Rings movie's creatures, special effects, props, and costumes but the entire New Zealand film industry. Watch a documentary with many behind-the-scenes details on the making of the LOTR films, take a selfie with your favorite Orc (?) or other LOTR characters and find the perfect souvenir in their shop of props and collectibles.
