Jewish Vienna - Half Day Private TourExplore > Austria > Vienna > Jewish Vienna - Half Day Private TourOverviewDiscover past and current Jewish contributions to Vienna's history and culture. Think Vienna and think Schoenberg, Schnitzler and Freud. These are just a few of the many Viennese Jews who have contributed significantly to Vienna’s international reputation as a city of intellectuals and artists. No matter where you walk in this European metropolis, you’ll find the signs of a vibrant Jewish life and history. In Vienna, Jewish life was originally located in the heart of the city. Within a short walk from our starting location, the grand St. Stephen’s Cathedral, we can find pieces of every phase of Jewish history in Austria. On Judenplatz, we’ll tour the remnants of a 13th century synagogue that has been integrated into a modern museum which digitally re-creates the synagogue and brings to life the story of this neighbourhood. In the baroque square you will see Rachel Whiteread’s unique ‘Nameless library’ Holocaust memorial. A short walk away, we will see the Neo-Classical Seitenstettengasse Temple, which houses the Jewish Community offices of Vienna. Depending on the security situation, we may be able to go inside and tour the beautiful interiors of the synagogue. Nearby, see the Baroque building Palais Eskeles, the main branch of the Jewish Museum and Jewish bookstore. You will also experience the flavour of the prominent sites along the Ringstrasse: admire the exteriors of the Opera, the Hofburg (Hapsburg Imperial Palace), government ministries and the private palaces of Jewish families. At the end of the tour your driver will drop you off within the city center to give you some time to explore Vienna on your own.
