Overview
Learn the history of the beautiful 7th hill of Lisbon.
Lisbon's stunning location and historic significance are complemented by remarkable aesthetics, making it a great city to explore on foot. This tour will help you to discover the city in the company of friendly and knowledgeable guides.
The 7th hill of Lisbon was the last to be settled. It was, however, the first to be urbanized at the turn of the 15th century, following the realisation of serious studies. Wider streets and larger spaces for new palaces met the needs of an emerging bourgeoisie. The history of this beautiful hill is modern and cosmopolitan, enjoying greater prominence during the 19th century. You will learn about its role in the bohemian and literary life of the city.
Learn how Lisbon grew outside the walls in the 16th century, and all that followed from that: Mannerist and Baroque legacies, the São Pedro de Alcântara area, the city during the Romantic period, the golden age of newspapers, and bohemian life. Your guide will also tell you about the poet Fernando Pessoa, as well as the famous "A Brasileira" coffee shop (there is even a statue of Pessoa outside the cafe!) and the modernist generation.
