The great earthquake of November 1, 1755, heavily damaged the southwestern Iberian Peninsula and northwestern Africa. It was one of the most destructive events in earth's history. During this walk, you'll gain an awareness of the reconstruction of the city's downtown area, together with the great social and scientific impact generated by the disaster in Europe. Learn about Portugal's painful beginning, in the 18th century, as a modern state, and the subsequent earthquake and rebirth of Lisbon: the dream of a new city come true. Following the earthquake, the city was rebuilt largely according to the plans of the Marquês de Pombal, who elected to demolish the remains of the earthquake and rebuild Lisbon's downtown in accordance with modern urban rules.
