Exploring Acco, Zippori & Rosh-Hanikra - ClassicExplore > Israel > Haifa > Exploring Acco, Zippori & Rosh-Hanikra - ClassicOverviewGet to know Acco. On his campaign in 1799 to Egypt and Israel, with the intention to storm onwards to India, Napoleon Bonaparte laid siege to Acco. He failed miserably. He never reached India, and India never became a French colony but was instead conquered by the English. Napoleon had to pull back to Egypt, and from there took a ship back to Paris. As we depart Haifa Port, we will cross Haifa Bay and go into the northern side for a visit of the ancient city of Acco. Explore a city with an amazing history dating back to almost 4000 years ago. Acre played pivotal role during the crusaders period. Descend into the underground headquarter of the Knights of St. John and experience the Medieval atmosphere. See the Crypt-made of paved stone floors and the stairway leading to a long underground passage believed to be an escape tunnel built by the Crusaders. Return up surface and explore the Ottoman phase of Acco. You'll see the 18th century Turkish Bazaar, stop at Kahan El-Umdan, and the picturesque Pisan port. If time permits we may be able to incorporate a visit to the large mosque of El-Jazar. Then drive to Rosh-Hanikra on the Mediterranean Sea near the Lebanese-Israel border. The most western and northern place in all of Israel. If you wish, you may enjoy a cable car ride to visit the grottos carved into the white choke stone. The view is beautiful. Next we'll drive to visit the Talmudic city of Zippori. The city dates back to the era of the Maccabees in the second century B.C.E., when it was founded by Alexander Janneus of the Hasmonean dynasty. Learn all about the fascinating history of this area.
