The Monastery Of St. John And Patmian HouseExplore > Greece > Patmos > The Monastery Of St. John And Patmian HouseOverviewPatmos has been called the Jerusalem of the Aegean. You will depart Scala harbour and drive up to the most impressive village of Chora, the capital of the island. On top of the hill, lies the Monastery of St. John, a Byzantine building, built in 1088 by the Blessed Christodoulos, servant of Christ. Behind it's imposing thick, high walls, there is a fantastic array of religious treasures, relics of saints, priceless heirlooms, jewellery and votive offerings. Monastery's library is of great importance with a rare collection of books and manuscripts. Continuing your tour you will visit the Grotto of St. John, taking the form of a 17th century Monastery built around the cave where St. John spent two years living the life of an ascetic (95-97 AD). Under the influence of visions, St John wrote the Apocalypse, dictating it to his disciple Prochoros. Taking the way down to Chora you will visit one of the traditional Patmian houses, the house of Simantiris family. The magnificence of Patmian house interiors leave one speechless. While entering the thick wooden entrance door is like stepping into another dimension. The Venetian style furniture and handicrafts as well as the ceilings and multi colored mosaics date back to the 18th century. After this impressive tour you shall return to Scala passing through the beautiful town of Chora. - Please note, to visit the Monastery gentlemen must wear long pants and women must wear skirts. - Please contact ShoreTrips if there are more than 12 people in your party. - Please note that the Sunday Supplement also applies to the following Public Holidays in 2020: January 1; March 2nd; March 25th, April 17th-19th; May 1st; June 8th; August 15th; October 28th and December 25th and 26th. - Supplement is per group and not per person. - Please note: The Monastery of St. John is closed between 1pm and 3pm on all days it is open.
